July CPI just landed in line with expectations - headline inflation at 3.4% year-on-year, core at 2.5%. No upside surprise. No meltdown. Nasdaq futures gained, Treasury yields fell, and September rate hike odds dropped to 44% - the most market-friendly outcome the data could have delivered given where we were heading in. One month of cooling inflation doesn't end the hiking debate, but it gives Warsh room to pause in September without losing credibility.
The week leading into today had its own drama. The July jobs report showed unexpected losses - the first negative payroll print of 2026 - which immediately trimmed rate hike expectations and sent the Nasdaq higher on Friday. Then Monday and Tuesday gave it back - the Dow fell 0.3%, the Nasdaq -0.6%, and Alphabet dropped 3.61% as the Iran impasse hardened with war compensation demands creating a new sticking point in negotiations. Brent crude hit $90 briefly this morning before pulling back. The Hormuz situation is back to being the swing variable.
Two other stories worth flagging. Strategy sold 1,690 BTC last week for approximately $109 million at $64,262 average - confirming the "never sell" era is genuinely over and adding a corporate selling overhang to the crypto picture. And Nvidia is partnering with Apollo and Blackstone on a $500 billion AI infrastructure funding package - the largest private capital commitment to AI infrastructure ever announced. Tonight Cisco reports after the close - the next read on enterprise AI demand.
